Lake Nakuru National Park

What to know before visiting Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park, located in the heart of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, is one of the country’s most iconic wildlife sanctuaries. Centered around the shimmering, alkaline Lake Nakuru, the park is famed for its spectacular birdlife, including vast flocks of flamingos that have long painted the shoreline pink when conditions allow.

Covering 188 square kilometers, the park offers diverse habitats—woodlands, rocky escarpments, waterfalls, and sweeping grasslands—creating a rich ecosystem for wildlife. It is a designated rhino sanctuary, home to both black and white rhinos, and also shelters Rothschild’s giraffes, lions, leopards, buffaloes, zebras, and more than 400 species of birds. The park’s combination of dramatic scenery, abundant wildlife, and exceptional birdwatching makes it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers.
